Still in the game!
Aliaksandra started her campaign in Madrid with a match against Anett Kontaveit (15 WTA). Before the match it was know that it will be a difficult encounter. In “Ready? Play!” we shared all the thoughts about the upcoming match. But hardly we could imagine what happened on court today.
Kontaveit started the match in a confident way while Sasha needed some time to get used to conditions as it was the first match on clay and to the fast game of the opponent. In 23 minutes first set ended with the score 0-6. Aliaksandra tried to find the rhythm but Kontaveit was just faultless as she made only 1 unforced error in the opening set.
But the story was different in the second set. Point by point and game by game Aliaksandra come back into the match and produced some fantastic shoots. She didn’t want to give up and in 38 minutes stoic Sasha won the second set 6-3.
In the deciding set Aliaksandra continued to play solid game and was serving well. After a difficult game on 2-2, Aliaksandra won 4 games in a row and finished the match with the score 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour and 34 minutes.
What a great match and a fantastic start in Mutua Madrid Open with a win over top-20 player in a good form. And also a winning start with a new coach! Keep it up, Aliaksandra. In the second round she will face the winner of the match Elise Mertens (18 WTA) – Anna Karolina Schmidlova (103 WTA).
